A Bit Busy

Been a bit busy these last couple of weeks, what with holiday, catching up after that and new jobs, etc.  So I haven't updated this site for a while.  I promise to get back on it in a few days and add all the new ones that we've now got/seen.  If I can remember 'em all!!  Keep a look out for new updates.

A Dirty Shame This Was Released!

Another three films this weekend, an oldie that I'd never seen all the way through, a winner of 'Best Feature' at the Toronto Film Festival 2004 and a sex comedy that wasn't worth the £2.75 we paid to see it.

Started off with It's All Gone Pete Tong with Paul Kaye, the legendary Dennis Pennis, as the DJ that went totally deaf.  We thought this to be a bit of a weird one at first with strange sequences, the skunk as a metaphor for his cocaine addiction as one example!  Although this was haled as a comedy, it has some very good serious moments and I think Paul Kaye did them justice.  I've never really seen him act outside the comedy circuit so it was interesting to see him play the less fun parts.  He did brilliantly and we need to see him in these roles a bit more I think!  The film is a strange one to explain, a documentary type film with real interviews from the Ibiza DJs, Pete Tong himself, Carl Cox, etc, mixed with a minute by minute storytelling of Frankie Wilde's life, including his drug addiction, alcohol abuse, sexcapades and party nights, how you can be man of the moment one minute then fall back down to earth with a big bang the next.  Overall I thought the film was 'different' from the usual and you can see why it won at the Toronto Film Festival.  One that wasn't very well plugged over here but deserved much more of an audience, I'll watch this one again.

I finally watched Gone In 60 Seconds (the remake of 2000) after many years of catching snippets of it!  Really liked this action flick, better than I thought it would be.  Good cast, I love Angelina Jolie who was her usual sexy self, Nick Cage, a fab and cool actor who does this sort of action role so well and Giovani Ribisi in his 10th year of acting but still managing to play the snotty little kid brother of much more well established actors.  It was a good action flick with plenty to see, one for the car fanatics out there, just like The Fast & The Furious.  The filming and soundtrack was very 'Bad Boys' and 'The Rock' although not likely to be put up for any awards, hence only winning a 'Golden Trailer Award' for best action movie!  A good action film with nothing to tax your brain but good for a Saturday night flick at home.

Finally, we have A Dirty Shame.  I heard pretty good reviews of this sex comedy from several web sites and movie mags but didn't quite know what to expect as I didn't have any idea of the storyline.  The basic plot is about a quiet Baltimore town and its residents, having suffered concussion in different accidents, wake up to find themselves sex crazy, running around town shaggin everyone in their path and being randy 24/7.  This is a John Waters comedy and some consider him to be a great director, I'd say he was taking the piss out of the film industry for making this shit film, just so he could see how daring he could be and what he could get away with.  Good sex comedies shouldn't just be made up of shock value, this film had a terrible storyline, one that I think he made up overnight as there was no thought to this movie.  The acting was crap, Tracey Ullman looked like she really didn't know what to do with herself while she was running around town trying to act horny!  Chris Isaak looked so uncomfortable and a bit embarrassed to be in this and I think Selma Blair was wasted as the airhead with big udders, Johnny Knoxville's role was probably the worst one he's done so far (with Grand Theft Parsons being a close second) and the storyline was so erratic and kept repeating itself to fill film time.  This could have been so much better with plenty of good laughs rather than John Waters putting willies and tits on screen expecting us to be shocked.....we've seen it all before love!

Be Cool

Watched Be Cool for the second time last night, went to the cinema to see this one last year as we couldn't wait.  Especially as it had Aerosmith in it!!!  It wasn't a fave of the movie critics, but I think this was because they were expecting another Get Shorty, which is wasn't supposed to be.  Yes it was the 'sequel' but that doesn't mean it has to be the same!  I loved what they did with this one.  It still had that element of cool that Get Shorty had, but throw in a few wild and silly characters and you've got a great comedy piece.  The little touches in it were great, the dance scene (a tribute to Pulp Fiction), Uma Thurman's t-shirts (Mourning & Widow), Harvey Keitel playing Nicky when, in Get Shorty, he played himself.  I thought this film was pretty clever when you really look into it and well thought out, although there are some silly scenes but it all adds to the fun.  The Rock played a superb part, not afraid to take the piss out of himself which is what I like to see in these 'stars' nowadays.  The only thing I was disappointed in was the lack of extras on the DVD, well actually there were no bloody extras at all.  Not even a gag reel which would have been worth putting on there for the fans.  Any chance of a special edition coming out d'ya think?  Don't buy this first edition, but wait for the extras people!  (Update: After going around the shops today, I've seen the DVD on release and it has extras on so maybe it was just the video shop that we borrowed from who didn't have the extras edition, cheapskates!!!)

The Interpreter, The Machinist & Hitchhikers

Good morning everybody.  Sitting at home with my feet up sipping a liscious coffee listening to the lovely rain outside.  Feel more awake now that I've had a cold shower.  I'm not a very good morning person!!!

Another Saturday full of naughty things to eat, (too much choccy) and 3 more films.  First of which was The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy - I have to say I wasn't impressed with this one.  I know what it was supposed to be like, a film full of random silliness, I know how the story goes even though I was too young to watch it or be interested in it when it was a series, hehe.  But it was just a bit too silly for me, the only good bit was at the end when they showed the 'construction of the world'.  Zooey Deschanel was good but I liked her in The Good Girl anyway, Mos Def was very good which I was surprised to see.  Usually the hip hop artists that are in these type of films bring a bit of attitude with them as they seem too embarrassed to really act in case their mates are watching.  Sam Rockwell has always been a bit out there for me but he just reminded me too much of Chad Kroeger from Nickelback and that's all I kept thinking when I looked at him.  Martin Freeman was ok although he did bring a bit too much of 'Tim' from the office with him, even throwing a little of Ricky Gervais' boss persona in there, (embarrassment at the party scene).  I thought the whole film was a bit too childish (for me) and the aliens in it where too 'muppety' or like something from The Dark Crystal (a bit old nowadays).  Maybe I've been spoilt with too many sci-fi films and I had too many high expectations of this one.  Basically I wouldn't watch this again if ya paid me.  The web site is worth a look though and is better than the film  http://hitchhikers.movies.go.com/.

Next we watched The Interpreter - I love these sort of films, politics, deception, Sean Penn and accents.  Nicole Kidman did her South African thing pretty well, Sean Penn played the brilliant and very emotional role of a Secret Service agent who had problems of his own.  I was pleased that they didn't ruin the film with a naff 'happy ending', they fall in love, have little kidman/penn babies, etc, etc.  The film was pretty much gripping all the way through and well thought out.  Even so, you knew who was in on it from the very beginning and the only annoyance was, 'How come these Secret Service agents can't see who's being sly and secretive but I can??'.  Overall a good political thriller though, Sean Penn has always been good in my opinion but gets even better with age.

The last film of the evening was The Machinist - Christian Bale was fantastic in this film, probably the best acting that I've seen from him, he made a great career decision here showing that he can play not just a serious character (as he has in the past I know) but one that has many sides.  That fact that he took the role so seriously made it all the more believable as you saw the actual pain he was in during filming.  He looked disgustingly emaciated and it was a shock to see him looking so old at such a young age.  The film reminded me of Fight Club a little bit.  The double personality, the dark/green filming, the paranoia.  It was a short film, short for the films of today anyway but it was a good decision not to drag this one out with unnecessary scenes, it gave you just enough to work out what was going on just as it was happening.  The little touches in it were great, (memorising the number plate of the red car in front of him, then you see a flash shot of him driving his own car and see that his number plate has an anagram of exactly the same numbers and letters, giving you more clues that the person he is chasing is actually himself).  A very clever dark film that is worth having on your shelf along with Memento and Fight Club.

Marvel Comics Weekend

We were very good this weekend, stayed in and actually watched a few films that we've already got instead of going out and getting more (as much as we luuurve doing that)!  Got a holiday coming up so trying to save a bit of spending money so we can splash out in the evenings in Cyprus.  Nate decided it should be a Marvel Comics weekend.  So we started off with Spidey 1 'n' 2, followed by Daredevil.  Had far too much choccy and ice cream again, need to concentrate on getting that bikini bod but I've got too much of a sweet-tooth, well an anything-that's-bad-for-you-tooth actually.  Only 4 more weeks and I've got to spend my days bare-skinned in the sun, I really must get more willpower, or.....get off my arse long enough to burn a few calories.  Had a lovely weekend again, loads of sunshine, although I was too hot!!  Planning on another lazy night in watching Elektra and The Punisher tonight, plenty of Marvel left!  Damn it, what was I saying about getting off my arse???!

Stander, Coach Carter & Triple X2

First movie of the day was Coach Carter - This was a great film and I've wanted to see it for ages.  Its a true story about a sporting goods store owner who goes back to his old high school, where he was a champion athlete, to coach the bastketball team.  Samuel L Jackson was perfect as the hardheaded coach who wouldn't take any shit from his students.  A fantastic film that we'll be watching again.  After that was over we tuned into Stander, another true story about Andre Stander who was a cop turned bank robber in South Africa.  This was a fascinating story, and you would probably question if most of what happened was actually true but that's how it went.  He managed to get away with so much, this was probably due to his knowledge of the force but I think, from what we saw, a lot of luck was involved!  This guy turns out to be a hero, probably due to the fact that he wasn't hurting anyone (apart from the bank's pockets) and he ended up giving a certain amount of his money back to the poorer community.  He formed the 'Stander Gang' after befriending 2 other criminals in prison and committing a jail break.  They robbed approximately 4 banks a day and were the most wanted men in the country at one point (this being the early 1980s).  Another great film, I really like Thomas Jane or Tom Jane or whatever he's calling himself these days.  Looking forward to seeing him in the Punisher 2 in 2006!!  Haven't got much to say about the film we saw on Monday Triple x2: The Next Level, was......well in my opinion........rubbish.  I was bored after about 30 minutes.  The story seemed like it was thrown together on the spur of the moment, nothing really clever about it.  I was glad when it was over, I missed the last half an hour as I was daydreaming.....zzzzzzzz.

Wedding Crashers

(SPOILER ALERT - Dont' read this is you wanna see the film without spoiling it! ) Went to see Wedding Crashers at last, hooray!  Thought it was great, plenty of laughs and a little bit of sentimentality on Owen Wilson's part throughout.  That's why I like Owen Wilson, he's not all one sided and doesn't necessarily stick to the same old role, although most of them are funny he can play the odd serious character (Behind Enemy Lines, The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty - in production) but he seems to be at his best with the off beat and funny stuff like The Royal Tenenbaums and Meet The Parents/Fockers.  I thought Vince Vaughn was back on form again, I miss his Swingers days where he was cool, a lot of his roles now make you want to punch him in the face even though they are pretty funny (Be Cool, Old School, Anchorman) - or is that just me??  What is it with that laugh he keeps doing?  The film started off with a bang, seeing the guys......well.......crash weddings!  Kinda makes you wanna go do it yourself, but I've yet to go to a wedding where everyone goes nuts and has that much fun!!  Must just be in America where they do things properly.  One of the best moments in the movie comes down to Will Ferrell with his 'Meatloaf....Now!'  Still living at home with his mum which is apparently 'living the dream'.  As creepy as he is in this, I loved him and he added the extra laughs towards the end.  My other fave bits were when Owen had a bit of a mental breakdown (cruel I know) and crashed weddings by himself, trashing the place and trying to snog the bride, telling depressing stories, grabbing the microphone from the band and smashing into all the equipment, very 'rock & roll'.  Alls well that ends well though and to cut the long story short, they all ended up happy of course, literally driving off into the sunset.  But its a feel-good movie and I wouldn't have had it any other way.  One for the DVD collection I think!

The Cooler & Kevin 'n' Perry

Sunday evening was spent watching Kevin & Perry Go Large, can you believe I've never seen that film?!  Then watched The Cooler which I thought was brill.  William H. Macy and Mario Bello.  Not a big fan of her characters usually but I got to like her a lot more in this film.  She played a pretty nice character and made her role of falling in love with H.Macy really believable.  I'm very into Casino films lately, maybe I'm craving a bit of the Vegas life, high rollers, gorgeous outfits and JD on the rocks, very sophis' ya know!  Once I'll definitely watch again!

Fantastic Four

Went to see Fantastic Four .  I did like it but it wasn't one of my faves.  I've seen better from the comic book adap's and felt that it went pretty quickly.  I prefer the X-Men type film that's a bit more in depth and delves into the characters more.  This one seemed a little rushed for my liking.  Nate said that they changed the storyline too, i.e. Doom wasn't on the ship in the original series and he didn't gradually deteriorate like the others, it was more of an instant change.  I like that he was changing at the same rate as the others, I think you needed to get to see his human side more in this movie instead of having him change straight away.  My fave character was The Thing and we agreed that it was the best idea to have a man in a suit rather than a CG character.  Michael Chiklis was brill and it made you warm to him more.  Overall rating 7/10.

War Of The Worlds

Thought War Of The Worlds was pretty good, good scare factor with the noise it made.  Having never seen the full version of the original I didn't quite know what to expect which was good as, some people who have, weren't as impressed as I was I don't think.  I think it scared me more as I tend to have nightmares about that sort of stuff so it felt like one of my dreams (nutcase).  The overall idea of the film was good, the fact that 'they're already here' as the tagline says and I thought Tom Cruise was a decent choice for the lead.  Fave scene - the thunder storm at the start along with the tripods coming out of the ground.  Visit http://www.waroftheworlds.com/.

Sin City - Film Noir

SIN CITY has to be the best film that I've seen in ages!  It really got me.  I'm not a huge fan, lets say, of Mickey Rourke due to his enormous ego and rudeness in any interviews I've seen or read over the last few years, but he was fantastic in this film.  I loved the way he played his character and I don't think anyone could have done it better.  Every actor/actress in this film played their part perfectly, Bruce Willis as the innocent hero cop thrown in jail, Rosario Dawson as the tough hooker trying to keep her part of town out of the grasp of dirty cops and the mob, Elijah Wood as the disturbing and very creepy silent killer.  This is gonna be added to my list of top 10 films!  Another great film from Robert Rodriguez, with a little help from everyone's fave director Quentin Tarantino of course.
